- Refuse to be intimidated. The first time a power maniac tries to intimidate you say, "Excuse me," in a strong, affirmative voice, stand straight with a posture that clearly states his or her aggressive behavior is not acceptable.
- Be firm about your self-worth. You deserve, as does every human being, to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what failings you might be having presently. Do not let anyone deny you these basic human rights.
- Do not put up with harassment. Rules apply to supervisors as well as those being supervised. Remind the power addict that harassment is against the law, and there are no exceptions, no matter how high a person's position. If you are being harassed at a meeting, whether business or public, remind the power maniac that he or she needs to adhere to Roberts Rules of Order.
- Listen carefully to a power maniac'a complaint once. Then, offer a solution if you have one, but do not let anyone barrage you with the same complaint hour after hour, day after day.
- Do not allow power addicts to transfer their failures onto you. Do not accept the blame for their shortcomings. Every person is responsible for himself only.
- Make your own decisions. We all have an equal right to think, so do not let a power maniac convince you that he or she should make your decisions for you. Be in charge of your own life.
- Separate yourself from the power addict (or group) if all else fails. Join another club or find another job, even if you have to settle for less monetary reward momentarily. You will be happier and more successful in the future.
